Services Performed: Lead Paint Abatement, Historic Wood Door Restoration, Surface Preparation, Sanding, and Refinishing
Project Overview
In January 2026, A1 Abatement was contracted to perform lead-based paint removal and restoration work on the massive wooden powerhouse bay doors at Center Hill Dam in Lancaster, Tennessee.
The doors had accumulated approximately 50 years of paint layers, creating a challenging removal and restoration project.
The original objective was to safely remove the existing lead-based paint. However, the client also hoped the wooden doors could be restored to their natural appearance and stained rather than repainted.
Achieving this result required carefully removing decades of coatings while preserving the underlying wood.
Lead Paint Removal & Containment
The project involved approximately 3,000 square feet of lead paint removal and surface restoration on powerhouse doors reaching approximately 50 feet in height.
Because Center Hill Dam's powerhouse needed to remain operational, our team developed a work plan that allowed abatement activities to proceed without shutting down essential facility operations.
Our work included:
Establishing regulated lead paint work areas and containment barriers.
Installing protective sheeting to control paint debris and dust.
Operating negative air filtration equipment within designated work areas.
Constructing specialized decontamination and controlled-access areas.
Using scissor lifts and other access equipment to reach elevated surfaces.
Removing deteriorated lead-based paint through multiple controlled removal methods.
Managing and disposing of lead-containing waste.
Preparing the exposed wood surfaces for refinishing and restoration.
The containment arrangements also allowed facility personnel and contractors to maintain designated access routes while work continued.
Specialized Paint Removal & Wood Restoration
One of the most difficult aspects of the project was removing decades of accumulated lead-based paint without unnecessarily damaging the original wooden doors.
Our team initially used chemical paint stripping methods to remove the existing coatings.
When the multiple layers proved more resistant than anticipated, additional controlled heat-assisted removal techniques were employed to help separate the paint from the wood.
Even after extensive stripping efforts, portions of the remaining coatings required additional surface preparation.
Our team ultimately incorporated carefully controlled sanding to achieve the desired exposed wood finish.
This combination of removal techniques required considerable patience, labor, and attention to detail, especially given the size and historic character of the doors.
Working Inside an Active Powerhouse
Maintaining powerhouse operations was a critical requirement throughout the project.
The massive doors served an active facility, meaning work areas, access routes, lifting equipment, and containment systems had to be carefully coordinated.
With work extending to significant heights, our crew also had to manage elevated access and equipment positioning while maintaining established safety procedures.
As the restoration progressed, the effort required to achieve a stain-ready finish became substantially greater than originally anticipated.
Rather than abandon the restoration objective and return to a painted finish, A1 Abatement continued refining its removal and preparation methods to deliver the client's preferred result.
Project Completion & Results
A1 Abatement successfully removed the existing lead-based paint and restored the wooden powerhouse doors to a condition suitable for staining and refinishing.
Although achieving the desired appearance required additional time and labor, the finished result exceeded the client's initial expectations.
What had originally appeared to be a project that might require repainting instead resulted in the preservation and restoration of the underlying wood.
The project demonstrated A1 Abatement's ability to combine regulated lead paint removal with detailed restoration work while coordinating operations inside an active industrial facility.
