Project Overview

In September 2025, A1 Abatement was contracted to perform asbestos testing and removal services at Park View Elementary School in Cookeville, Tennessee, during an extensive school renovation project.

Our team was brought in after concerns arose regarding potentially asbestos-containing building materials. Testing confirmed the presence of asbestos in flooring materials and adhesives, requiring professional abatement before renovations could proceed in the affected areas.

Working alongside Putnam County Schools and other contractors, A1 Abatement was responsible for removing approximately 15,000 square feet of asbestos-containing materials throughout the school's main hallways, classrooms, cafeteria, and additional affected areas.

Asbestos-Containing Materials Removed

The project involved several types of asbestos-containing building materials, including:

  • Asbestos-containing vinyl floor tile (VCT)

  • Asbestos-containing flooring mastic and adhesives

  • Asbestos-containing adhesive previously used to secure classroom chalkboards

As the project progressed, additional asbestos-containing flooring was discovered in the cafeteria, requiring a significant change order and expansion of the original scope of work.

Our team adjusted the abatement plan to accommodate the additional materials while coordinating with contractors already working throughout the building.

Our Asbestos Abatement Process

Following initial testing and project approval, A1 Abatement developed and implemented an asbestos abatement plan in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.

Our work included:

  • Establishing regulated work areas and containment barriers

  • Operating negative air filtration equipment

  • Using wet removal techniques to help control airborne fibers

  • Equipping workers with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Removing asbestos-containing flooring, mastic, and wall adhesives

  • Properly packaging and handling asbestos-containing waste

  • Coordinating regulated waste transportation and disposal

A designated asbestos waste dumpster was staged outside the facility, and our team coordinated with waste management providers to ensure proper disposal.

Throughout the project, our focus remained on safe removal practices, regulatory compliance, and maintaining communication with the other contractors on site.

Project Challenges & Coordination

One of the greatest challenges of this project was completing asbestos abatement during an active, large-scale school renovation.

Multiple contractors were working throughout the facility, and our crew had to coordinate access to different areas while minimizing additional interruptions to the construction schedule.

The discovery of asbestos-containing flooring in the cafeteria also required a substantial expansion of the original project scope.

Additionally, our team worked around existing plumbing and electrical complications that arose during the renovation.

Despite these challenges, A1 Abatement successfully coordinated the expanded scope of work without creating further disruptions to the overall project.

Project Completion & Clearance

Following the completion of asbestos removal, an independent third-party testing company conducted clearance evaluations of the affected work areas.

The project passed its initial clearance evaluations without requiring additional corrective abatement work.

A1 Abatement also coordinated applicable AHERA-related oversight and inspection requirements, with the project passing the initial inspections.

The successful completion of the asbestos abatement allowed the affected areas to proceed to the next phase of renovation.

This project demonstrates A1 Abatement's ability to manage large commercial and institutional asbestos abatement projects, adapt to unexpected changes in scope, and work effectively alongside multiple contractors.
